Work on Exotic Matter Wins Physics Nobel

“British scientists David Thouless, Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz won the Nobel Physics Prize on Tuesday for revealing the secrets of exotic matter, the Nobel jury said. ‘This year’s laureates opened the door on an unknown world where matter can assume strange states. They have used advanced mathematical methods to study unusual phases, or states, of matter, such as superconductors, superfluids or thin magnetic films. Thanks to their pioneering work, the hunt is now on for new and exotic phases of matter,’ it said.”

Scientists Discover a Strange New Phase of Matter Called ‘Time Crystals’

“New research has confirmed the existence of a bizarre phase of matter once thought to be impossible – a quantum alignment known as a “time crystal.” The discovery may one day have important implications for quantum computers, which are super-powerful machines that perform exponentially faster than conventional computers by exploiting the rules of quantum dynamics. At present, however, time crystals are more of a scientific oddity with no known real-world applications.”

MIT researchers create new form of matter

“By using lasers to manipulate a superfluid gas known as a Bose-Einstein condensate, the team was able to coax the condensate into a quantum phase of matter that has a rigid structure – like a solid – and can flow without viscosity – a key characteristic of a superfluid. Studies into this apparently contradictory phase of matter could yield deeper insights into superfluids and superconductors, which are important for improvements in technologies such as superconducting magnets and sensors, as well as efficient energy transport.”

  1. For people who were complaining about Seeker taking over and ruining the channel. This video should calm them down.

  2. The two of you are probably my favourite combination of presenters/reporters/teachers.

  3. I have a quick question. Where do you guys get research papers to these interesting topics? Thanks

  4. Wait wait hold the phone if superfluid acts like a fluid in a coffee cup and you stir this fluid and the fluid never stop spinning that violates some physics there. That constitutes perpetual motion. The scientist developed or discovered superfluid did they also at the same time perpetual motion?

  5. I just looked it up and there is no mention of “Stranger” matter anywhere. Strange matter is the only thing I can find. Is this what you meant?

  6. I have a question. In what state does Photonic Matter exist in? I have not been able to find a definitive answer. I know the process of creating it involved getting the atoms to a Highly Excited Rydberg States, but I can’t find mention if it has to be maintained in that state.

  7. Omg i found a state of matter too. is called superliquid XD i also found supergas also XDXDXD

  8. They actually used this A.I. software to help with the laser cooling algorithm. The AI found out ways of cooling matter much faster and more efficient than humans could ever think of. The AI figured out how and when to fire the lasers in such a pulse as to slow it down to almost absolute zero. In fact, with this AI, they got gasses down to 3 degrees below absolute zero. The scientists believe that matter could have a second boiling point below absolute zero.

  9. hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do a video just on state of matter plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  10. I actually prefer new Seeker. Everyone seems to be a bit more engaged & care more about their shit. keep it up.

  11. Couldn’t we have named them like we named Planets?

I might have remembered them if I had a rhyme.

    Solid – Some
    Liquid – Like
    Gas – Gold
    Superliquid – Some
    plasma – Prefer
    Supersolid – Silver

  12. Given the comments about perpetual motion machines and free energy and other flagrant violations of Newton’s laws of motion and the laws of Thermodynamics, I don’t know if some of you are ready for an “AP” physics class, but it’s Khan Academy so it’s free and there’s no excuse not to at least try to learn why those lines of reasoning are fallacious.
